below grade, into a state of the art chemical engineering research
laboratory. |
Challenges: |
Provide all
new infrastructures to support diverse laboratory research activities in
“land locked” sub-basement location, two stories below grade, without
impacting façade or site lines of building originally designed by I.M.
Pei. Avoid interrupting existing systems serving ongoing research
facilities throughout the building serving as headquarters of MIT
Chemical Engineering Department. |
Implementation: |
Designed all new makeup air system, new specialized exhaust systems, new
ADA-compliant lavatories, new process water systems, new laboratory acid
waste and vent system with sump and transfer stations, tempered water
emergency showers, hydraulically-designed sprinkler system, power
distribution including overhead bus duct distribution, high efficiency
lighting, new fire alarm and emergency evacuation systems. Employed DDC
controls to maintain environmental requirements and assure maximum
energy efficiency. |
